I was born in Ghana. My father, Ayoma Alhassan, is a wood carver. He specializes in home decor and I admired his work so much. But I wasn't good at drawing, neither could I hold a knife to design. My mum suggested I join my dad in his workshop. I felt this craft would be difficult and didn't want to work with him. I did try, but found it difficult to learn and gave up in order to learn something else. After some years, my friends and family convinced me to give it another try. Eventually, I developed passion for the work. After some time, what I thought I couldn't do became so easy for me. I loved my work after a carving or mask was finished and always said to myself, 'I can do it.' Today, I love this work more than anything. My inspiration comes from my dad, the family and nature. Sese wood is my main material and my favorite part of the process is the finishing aspect. Quality and good finishing characterize my designs. The wood chips and sawdust left is used by the community as firewood and charcoal. My hope for the future is to be a great artist and help the less privileged.'...
